Recently my speedo needle was bouncing so I removed the cable and lube’d it behind the speedo and it still bounced. I then removed the other end from the speedo drive at the ZF and poured oil into the speedo drive and cable and that fixed my issue. Do not remove the speedo drive mechanism just the cable as there is a part that will come apart in the ZF trans from what I have heard.

Well, i did not know that anything would come apart… I took the angle drive off when I replaced my speedo cable as well…(did not try to take the drive apart) nothing happened to my knowledge..
then I spent quite some time with gasoline to flush the old crap out and then induced new oil in it… it feels very good now compared to before….
Isn’t there a bolt that goes through the case that retains the drive element in the ZF case in place?
I think you’re OK removing the angle drive, as long as you keep that retainer bolt in place…
(Someone speak up if I’m incorrect on this…)
Wade and I did drop the drive element into the case accidentally, but we’re luckily able to fish it back out with a magnet through it’s hole…. without having to open the case back up. BUT…. My ZF was on Wade’s workbench, not in the car.
MIGHT be good to check the angle drive. Can you move the wheels now? Put it in 5th, push in the clutch, rotate the back wheels, and see if the angle drive moves…
(But it’s funny that the needle is stuck at 20 MPH)…

PS. You can download the ZF manual from the POCA Website to confirm this (if you’re a member). You may be able to still find the manual on the internet…. It’s the same transaxle used on the Maserati Bora (and the Fendt Roller, what ever that is!)
The grand grandfather & grandfather of our trans…(DKW leader in German front wheel drive of the period , Hanomag, Mercedes had their hands in it)
Exchange rate is 0.0011 call it $1600
looks familiar…??
frontwheel drive…. Engine sat behind the transmission..
Just in case anybody gets any idea… Those were 4 speed and the engine had around 80 hp….. diff ratio 5.28
I was just about to pull the trigger, then you talked me out of it!

You’re better off to get the Beverly Hills car club automatic transmission with split Bluetooth driveshafts. They never break‼️

When you say stuck at 20 miles an hour… Do you mean the needle is permanently at 20 miles an hour no matter if you move or not it’s just kicking up to 20 miles an hour not higher?
NO IT STUCK AT 20 MPH UNTIL I TOOK CABLE OUT THEN BACK TO 0
The way a speedometer typically works is the speedo cable whirls a bar with a magnet on it, and the magnetic force is sensed by a bar connected th the speedometer needle.
The magnet and the sensing bar are not supposed to touch.
Given that your needle stuck at 20 mph, that might lead me to suspect something in the speedometer body.
You might be able to spin the cable at the angle adapter with a drill, and have someone watch the speedo for you…. But this won’t tell you if it’s in the cable or the instrument body.
You might need to pull the speedo out of the dash to isolate the problem…
Rocky
Sounds like a plan!
Keep us posted!
There is a good speedometer repair shop in Tucson (TJ’s Speedometer on Stone Ave).
If it’s in the instrument, he might be able to help, if you don’t have anyone local.
