Steering wheel movement

I believe that is normal, and is an added safety feature of that MY that it gives in case of collision. But it should be very firm.

That is not normal, but often encountered! The upper column shaft should not move in and out in the outer mounting tube. The plastic bushings at either end of the tube fail over time and need replacing, many vendors offer a bronze bushing upgrade.

The collapsible slip tube is lower and designed to allow the front of the vehicle to move toward to driver without pushing the steering wheel/column into the driver chest in a heavy frontal crash. It too can become loose over time resulting in a little side to side slop that can be fixed.

Thanks Julian. We'll pull the steering column and see what we got. I'll have him order the upper and lower bushing in bronze and replace them both while we have the column apart. He's ordered parts from IPSCO before so that's probably where we'll get them from.

Mine did that too. There is a retaining clip that fits in a notch on the inner column as I recall. If it slips out of the notch you get the movement in the shaft as you describe. See Part #11.
