First of all let me say that if not for the various Pantera vendors many of us probably would find it difficult to maintain our cars. They have done a great job of sourcing parts and fabricating parts no longer available.

However in 12 + years owning my second Pantera I have found a large difference in pricing and customer support. Most vendors no longer show pricing and require direct calls. I needed a small rubber bushing that connects the power window motor to the regulator gear. I used an old pricing guide from one vendor to establish a base and get the factory part #. In the 4 Qtr. of 1999 this part was $ 4.95. A call to this vendor was the price was now $34.00. The attitude coming across the phone was pretty much take it or leave it. Another call to a large vendor and forum supporter told me he was pretty sure that he did not have the part and was not at his computer to check. He did not offer to call me back or have me call him later. Maybe this small sale did not interest him.

There is one vendor who has an excellent web site with pricing. Wilkinson's price was $17.00 for the same part. Still pricey but at least I knew ahead of time. While I was ordering from them I found several other parts I wanted. The prices were well under the others I had previously checked. Bill, at Wilkinson spent a great deal of time answering a lot of my questions. As an FYI Steve Wilkinson was apparently just back from the factory which is still open and selling parts.

My point of this long and boring story is that we need to be prudent with our purchases. I will support the vendors who are willing to but forth the effort to answer my questions and at least act like they care about my business.

Sir I couldn't agree more. I will search out for venders with catalogs and list of things they sell including price. If it not on their list or in their catalog I go elswhere. I would wrather know up front what they have. I am not interested in their games. I wish I knew more of what some of these venders have available. Does Wilkinson have a catalog of what they actually have? I am going to need a lot of parts. My restoration is just begining.

His site is great for the factory parts, but what of aftermarket? I know he has/did have campy clones and many other things. I have yet to find that on the website. In that regard PI is stellar.
However, I agree with your point. I'd rather do shopping via a website or catalog than call each vendor, but call I do. Thankfully as was pointed out on this forum, folks that have been doing it longer can usually point you to a person who may have what you need.
But, yeah, it would sure be nice to know who has what.
The 3 Vendors I've found to be honest, fair in pricing, willing to help you as much as you need and don't rip you off in the shipping costs are Dennis Quella at Pantera Performance, Jerry at Pantera Motorsports and Steve or Bill at Wilkinson . The Bobby Byars have also been really fair but I haven't dealt with them as much as the others. All have stood behind their products.

If there were a vendor who would send using USPS, he would get all of my business. With flat rate boxes, a lot of the stuff that we order would cost $8.60 to send anywhere in the U.S. I've been charged $60+ for items shipped that would have easily fit into that box. USPS now has business pick up, on line everything so the old excuse that I used to get about them not having time to take it to the post office special trip doesn't hold water. They would get more money in orders with the money that we saved from the shipping charges as we'd have more money to order toys with!

I will say Mario hooked me up with the front 17" campy clones. He split a complete set, which most of you know most vendors aren't keen on. Little hard to get on the phone, or to return messages, but good guy once you get ahold of him.

I have found, that showing up at the vendors in person(I'm lucky, I'm within a hour of three of them) generally gets more attentin than calling and "inquiring" about parts. My feeling is that they get alot of guys window shopping by phone, and get frustrated.

I found most all the vendors I've delt with over the last two years to be pretty straight up.

Dennis, time often runs short, but I'd be more than happy to pick up a order for you and drop it off at UPS.

I'm with you, Dennis. Being in Canada, the courier companies just hammer me with brokerage fees on shipments from the States. I have had courier bills larger than the value of the parts being shipped! They also create delays at the border by holding my orders up while they track me down to get authorization for the brokerage. There is none of that with USPS and, because there are no delays at the border, they are not only much cheaper but just as fast.

I have had great service from Precision ProFormance, who work with me to ensure customs duties and sales taxes (VAT) are minimized. They are also willing to ship USPS, as I recall. Pantera Performance Centre offers great service too, but I don't think they are willing to ship USPS. Larry Stock at Pantera Parts Connection has had some serious frustrations recently with couriers, and told me that he will probably be shipping USPS from now on.
Precision ProFormance sold me a set of STEEL GR4 flairs and they came rusty ... and fit like S#$! for 1700.00 ... I dont need to say more .. except I got no responce from and email and a phone call to them.

I can fix them .. but for 1700.00 they got to lay off the crack pipe !

PI has always and still is my First Call.. the service is great and parts are reasonable price.

Excuse my ignorance. I am familiar with and not at all happy with UPS but what the heck is USPS? Peter is right, CDN shipping is a total rip and as slow as possible.

(Except when I arrange for Hall to ship me stuff via FedEx. It never gets stopped at the border - no customs, brokers fees, duties or anything and sails directly to my office the next day.)
The advise I got in the last couple days from George & Julian ... in conjuction with the fine young lady at United States Postal Service aka USPS ... Parcel Post shipping with the package marked as Industrial Samples are INSURABLE for their value but not taxable for their value .. theres no guarrantee what customs will do ..will the tax you or not... there not supposed to ... or as Julian suggested mark it as a gift ... this time of the year there is NO WAY they can check every package. Oh, and the cost of USPS is the most cost effective.

Ron
Peter (and any other Canuks), you are so right about shipping to Canada. The key with UPS and FedEx is NEVER use ground shipping as it will almost always cost more than air because with air (express/overnight etc.) all the brokerage and fees are usually included free. I recently ordered some parts from a vendor I love dealing with and a new guy there thought he'd do me a big favor and save me money by shipping ground. Shipping was over 40% of the total cost.

USPS is slow, but it is WAY cheaper to Canada.
Mark:

I'm told that marking shipments "antique auto parts" qualifies them for an exemption from duties under NAFTA. I have asked for all my shipments to be labelled that way, and most vendors will happily comply. In this way, and by shipping USPS to an address in Alberta, I save brokerage, duties and provincial sales tax, leaving only the GST and Visa currency exchange fee to pay. Before I figured this out, I would have to take the purchase price of a part in $US and double it to get the final price in Canadian dollars. The exchange rate is better these days, which also helps.

The one thing I have never done is compare S&H charges between vendors. I suspect that some of them tack on an additional fee in addition to simply passing on their actual courier or postage cost. I remember the time I ordered a space-saver spare tire & wheel for my car from Wilkinson's, and the their S&H charge was $225US.

Ron,

Sorry to hear about the flares, as you know mine went back to Larry Stock they were such a poor fit. I was told on the vine that both these vendors have their flares made by the same person. Apparently Dennis Quella has a different source and his fit better, but I've yet to fork out the dough and order another set to actually test that out.

Peter, indeed they will, and I always get that done. The extra costs I refer to are from the shipping companies to cover brokerage fees which are "extra" on ground shipments and included with air/express service.

Hope you're surviving the cold and snow out there. We're getting it today after positively balmy weather all week.
All I will say about vendors is I have had good and bad experiences with all of them. But one of them really ticked me off when they would not honor a $1000 Gift certificate that was won at Vegas even though it was purchased by a third party in the vendors name. Thus, this vendor just kept an extra grand they did not deserve.
Julian ... I'm not about complaining .. so today I sanded them off primed them and re labeled them until I'm ready to fit them ... I can fit them ... just as you and Jerry at PI warned me they take a lot of work to fit them... So I kinda expected it.

Now I just gotta get the wheels and tires sorted out so I can fit them.

Ron
I would have to agree with CrazyDave, in that I have had a problem of some sort, with almost every vender that I have dealt with. And I have dealt with a lot of them, and spent alot of money doing so. The mistakes do not upset near as much, as when they act like they do not want to fix their mistake. I have been pretty lucky in that almost every time, I have been able to resolve the issue. And when I am not able, then I am sure to spend my money somewhere else the next time.
