4744 has a stablemate...A 2000 Audi TT 1.8L turbo quattro coupe.
These 4 cyl. engines are transverse, twin cam,5 valves-per-cylinder,fuel injected little rockets, with a turbo and an intercooler. They also have timing belts with roller bearing tensioners, and are equipped with a very fragile plastic (!) water pump impeller. To avoid the catastrophic damages that occur due to the belts or tensioners failing (picture all 20 valves hitting the pistons) or the risk of broken w/p pieces throughout the cooling system (picture warping the head) the recommended interval for replacing these parts (and a few other "while you're in there" parts) is every 60,000 miles. My TT recentley achieved that milestone, and I had my favorite local shop install these parts. www.MetricMotorsAuto.com
This album chronicles 4744's visit during this successful transplant surgery, and I can report that both are now well and happy, and back on those wine valley roads.
