I like to leave my front hood open for show display, but a good wind gust can blow the hood off the support rod, and the subsequent drop could likely capture the rod and leave nasty marks.
I saw a simple solution in the POCA 2008 #3 issue using some jack chain and a set-screw collar. But while the function was good, I found the appearance to be lacking.
After kicking the idea around for several months, I finally put together my solution:
Harbor Freight drill stop set -
I used the 1/4" piece and drilled it to match prop rod diameter.
8/32 thumb screw - I ground the tip to a point for a better bite into the prop rod.
I had to retap the drill stop set-screw threads to match (couldn't find a thumb screw to match the original threads)
Four inches of chrome ball chain (as used for ceiling fans)
Two ball chain end couplings.
Two SS 6/32 hex socket round head bolts.
Drill and tap the stop collar for the 6/32 round head, drill and tap the hood just above the prop hole.
Assemble pieces.
I can just unsnap the chain from the hood fitting, and store collar and chain at the base of the prop rod. For display, snap chain back in place, slide collar down tight and twist the thumb screw.
Cost about $4.00. Time about an hour.
What do you think?
