BTW if first start, why did the fans come on with cold water?

Most likely the thermostatic switches in the radiator have been bypassed & the fans now come on with the key.

That's the way my car was wired when I bought it 10-11 years ago. I've added thermo-switches to the radiator, but haven't corrected the wiring yet.
