I recently purchased an ERA GT 40 replica which was assembled by ERA and for which ERA had a -2 transaxle rebuilt. The car was owned by a long-term acquaintance of a principal at ERA and only covered 1,400 miles over 4.5 years as its owner vintage and ALMS raced extensively around the country and was selcom home.
I notice two interesting noises which would cause anxiety in a ZF 915 transmission for a Porsche but I am unsure about whether these are normal in a -2.
The first noise is a groan/rumble that sounds more like a bearing noise and only is heard when cornering with load on the drivetrain. I was told that the transaxle was a limited slip and I confirmed that it is given the typical tests. I have had clutch lsd's and quaiffe lsd's in porsche's but never heard this noise. Any guesses?
The second noise seems to clearly be ring and pinion related as it occurs at wheel rotation ferquency when not loaded. The noise is a "click" which seems to be much quieter when warm. I notice that the rotational play at the output flanges in degrees of rotation is higher than that I would expect on a porsche zf, either used or freshly rebuilt.
Any guesses? What are the degrees of rotation one can expect on a -2 output flange. Anybody want to trade for a 6speed?
