Question. Going throught some fact findings (ie. checking to see what kind, if any, thermostat was on the car) I noticed that the thermostat "hat" is smaller than the brass plug hole.

The Tstat looks like pics from others (AlanM, and ChuckM) best as I can see.

Is it supposed to be like this, or, is the hat (when open) supposed to totally plug that area? My Tstat had is .660, the plug opening is about .710.

As I understand the engineering, the small diameter pilots into the hole and the rest of the thermostat body then comes down on top, sealing the hole. FWIW, I get about a year out of a thermostat, then temp measurements start flickering up/down 10 degrees. So I change then each Spring. Thermostats are 1930s- technology, and I cut a thermostat up to see what was inside; see Oct '99 POCA News for details.
