5/8 Drive Impact

I picked this IR impact electric... up at a yard sale. I assumed it was 1/2 inch, then I figured it was 3/4, but now I know it is 5/8. I never heard of this before. The board is not letting upload a pic right mow, but It is heavy cast AL looks like any other exept I can put a 5/8 open end wrench on the out put square. Anybody?

I never heard of this. Could it be a metric size?

POS.. I did not even work when I put a sloppy 3/4 adapter on it. I was going to grind it down to 1/2 but now I'm just going to chunk it.

So, is the girl in the picture smiling because bigger is better? Why go 1/2 inch when you can supersize it!
Now, does anyone know the origin or reason why 5/8 would exist? I am curious.

WOW ! George they do exist. I blew the impact out with electric cleader and lubed it up and it came back to life. The thing weighs a ton and I would only use it in the field where no compressed air is available. I'm still going to grind her down to 1/2.
