Can anyone out there set me straight.did detomaso offer a boss 351 motor for a few panteras in 71 with a hydrolic cam.Im in the process of buying a 71 and the owner claims its a 351 boss 330 hp motor,i say no,also this car has 16,000 origial miles with no upgrades what so ever,what potenial problems will have if any with car,also owner claims it does not overheat,with the stock system in place,what do think guys

No. The following are what seems to be true:
*ALL U.S Panteras 1971-1974 came with std Ford 351Cs w/hydraulic cams.
*Not all the above came with 4-bolt main caps- some were 2-bolt.
*No mechanical cams whatsoever in U.S Panteras.
*Boss engines never had hydraulic cams, were only offered 1970-71 & NOT in U.S Panteras. Possibly in the Gr-3 & Gr/GT 4 racers sold in Europe
*In '72, there was a 'HO' engine with a mechanical cam & open chamber heads. Panteras didn't get this one, either.
*The original block serial number is stamped above the bellhousing on the drivers side & this should match the motor number tag in the front trunk & the rear inner fender panel tag. But since all blocks were the same, it won't ID a Boss engine either.
