Is a 73 and 72 speedometer cable the same.

More than likley yes. Mine broke at the trans end after I installed a side mount kit for my very early 71. I put it in a bind when I put it back together. I rerouted it and shortened the outside cable housing by about 5" Then I went to the NAPA store and bought a new cable end that crimped on. This fixed it. I used a 3" peice of heat shrink to keep it together where it meets the trans. While I had the cable out of the sheath it measured 111 inches. Napa also sells a 100 foot roll of the inside cable.
