Hmmmmm, how much for a stock wingnut??? Wink

Mark, while what you say is true for "most" cars, this sale represents the beauty of the internet for guys that are "finishing" a car. The simple items are the worst...... Yes, this was a crazy amount for an air cleaner, but if it is an air cleaner to a car that is selling in the $200K range.....is it worth it? Could it make the car "appear" to be worth more money now?

One of the special Goose only idler pulley brackets popped up on ebay this week.....for $99 starting bid. Is it worth it? I'd say that if you are missing/needing one to move your car project forward, and you have exhausted all of the usual suspects that may have one...then yes, it may be worth it.

How much to pay a machinist to cut one out for you at $65 an hour?? Hmmmm....

The Mustang world went thru this phenomenom when eBay started, and all the parts for Boss & CJ Mustangs went thru the roof. All the low buckers complained....how they should have bought one last week....blah blah blah....but for the guy sitting there with a project car missing a shvanzenheimer valve thingy to be able to call the car finished....he'd gladly pay high dollar to find this part!

If you think back to pre-ebay days, all you had was the Hemmings Motor news, local swap meets, and a few large national meets to try and find parts....and clubs.

All you could do was spend money and time searching, writing letters or calling, and at best, "hope" that you stumbled across a part somewhere, or that someone would have pity on you and turn a piece loose from their inventory. (How many times have you come home empty handed from a swap meet..nothing rare or needed found?)

I think that is what happened here....someone turned a piece loose from their inventory.....it's just that instead of paying for air fare, hotel, meals, rental car, beer, etc, all buyers had to do now was use your keyboard to buy the part......still may have cost the same in the end! Beer would still be optional........

Ciao!

Hello Steve; Your evaluation is "Spot On"!...& whom am I to criticize the person paying that amount for a Mangusta air cleaner, when I just paid $70.00 for a seat belt receiver for my 1973 CJ ( Cobra Jet) Mach 1, being that for a 1973 Mach 1 that seat belt receiver was ONLY made for 1973, a 1 year only run.

For if I extrapolated the value of my 1973 CJ Mach 1 ( It's a "1" of "1" according to Marti Report) at $20,000.00 & a DeTomaso Mangusta at $200,000.00, then my $70.00 seat belt receiver becomes a $700.00 seat belt receiver if it were for a Mangusta.

I just remembered I paid $200.00 for a "Special" Cobra Jet air cleaner with a vacuum actuated "Trap Door"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-1...em35e2840e0d&vxp=mtr

so...multiply MY $200.00 Mach 1 air cleaner by the 10xs Mangusta valuation & you get a $2,000.00 Mangusta air cleaner!..

DAMN!....hoisted on my own Petard by my own logic!...Mark

Pétardiers were used during sieges of castles or fortified cities. The pétard, a rather primitive and exceedingly dangerous explosive device, consisted of a brass or iron bell-shaped device filled with gunpowder fixed to a wooden base called a madrier. This was attached to a wall or gate using hooks and rings, the fuse lit and, if successful, the resulting explosive force, concentrated at the target point, would blow a hole in the obstruction, allowing assault troops to enter.
The word remains in modern usage in the phrase hoist with one's own petard, which means "to be harmed by one's own plan to harm someone else" or "to fall into one's own trap," implying that one could be lifted up (hoist, or blown upward) by one's own bomb.

Now how many of those seat belt receivers were made, give an estimate. Let's assume they never made any aftermarket parts, they sold 133,000, Mustangs in 1973. oh it is a 2Dr SportsRoof they only made 10,000 of those.

I wonder what kind of price a 1969 Boss9 OE glass fender would bring at auction.

The air cleaner assembly may have been a bit expensive but then only 400 were ever made, many were removed and tossed in favor of a chrome Shelby style HiPo round dish.

on the other hand see what a shaker repop is worth?

.....I need to find the third owner of my car.....somewhere down in Fresno, there is a Goose air cleaner hanging on a wall of a shop....dusty....neglected....forgotten! ...and a few other parts I believe....!

Those are some HEFTY prices for Mustang parts...but then, the two dealers are some of the highest price boyz out there! Nice repop though!!!! Previous have been 'glass.
