I am just replacing my alternator as the old one has a very nosiy bearing. It was easy to remove and I thought I remembered where the wires went. It has the heavy duty GM
alternator with the 2 wire plug and one wire to the batter terminal on the back. I thought I had it all hooked up right, but the ammeter does not do anything. So I must have it connected wrong. The wiring harness has so many splices it's hard to tell what goes where. Out of the one side of the 2 wire plug is a big red wire that I am sure what not connected to anything and is only about 3 inches long. The goes to the field
plug on the case stamping. There is a heavy hot wire that I was sure went to the battery
terminal. I then thought maybe the plug was not in all the way but it seemed to be. Any suggestions on what might be wrong. I switched on the fans (Yes, mine are throught a switch) and that used to move the ammeter
needle quite a bit, but not this time. The car had been converted over to the HD alternator sometime in the past as that plug was already spliced on. Thanks for any suggestions.
