Alternators

On my car I upgraded from the original 1G alternator (60 amp) to a 3GIF (intermediate frame) which has 100 amps output. The Ford Motorcraft Part Number for the correct fit (180 pivot mount) is GL-494-RM. To make the wiring easier, P A Performance make a wire adaptor kit which retains the original functionality of the "gen" light. Like you, I also upgraded to an electronic ignition so the extra output was much needed to support the power requirements of the electronics. Good luck with your project.....

I got one of the hi-amp alternators from PI Motorsports when my old one went out. It was a stock replacement, as I didn't want to mess with the conversion to the newer style that seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. I had the new amp bench tested and it was putting out 150amps. Probably a cop-car alternator. Been running it for a couple of years now with no problems.

Don't go with a one wire alternator.

I got what the dealer looked up as the Gl-494-RM. The original Alt fan rubs the housing and the shaft is to short to space the fan out. On the Altit says F6PZ- KARM1. What went Wrong? Anyone need an alternator cheap?

You had to take the fan off the old unit and put it on the new one? I got the PI alt, and it came with a fan. It looked identical to the original and bolted right in.

Yes I took the Original fan off. Now that I used the original one for a core, it is gone.

Most cities will have a starter/alternator rebuilder. Find the one that has been there forever and works on individual units - not the sweat shop high number rebuilder. Perhaps in the old, truck repair district of your town.

You'll be able to talk through your needs and issues with the guy that will actually turn the wrenches. AND he'll have - or know where to get - all the parts required. Have them test the alternator after all is finished to determine your true amperage output.

Worked for me on my starter and alternator.

Sorry Captaintobeys, I should have specified, the GL-494-RM is a newer design alternator that utilizes an internal fan. You do not reuse your old fan or pulley. You simply add a one groove pulley and you are all set. Match the diameter of the pulley as close as you can with the oringal 1G pulley size and you will run about the same ratio of alternator speed to engine speed and will be able to use the orignal fan belt.

Thanx for the help.Can I use the single groove pulley that ame off of the original alternator? Will I have to do anything with the bracket?

The first time I pulled up the last Post it did not show me the picture. The second time it did. So it looks like the single arm bracket stays the same.

Do you by chance have a Diagram to eliminate the old external voltage regulator?

Hello captaintobeys, You will want to get a single groove pulley made for a 3G alternator. They are commonly available. As far as the external regualtor is concerned, I used an upgrade kit from P A Performance that retained all of the functionality of the "gen" light and was very easy to install. The part number of the upgrade kit is 462802C. You will find that this is a very reliable and safe way to upgrade your Pantera's old electrical system.

My last day with Ford is 2/28. Then Off to Beaches and Palm Trees.

I have a 95 amp unit from a Ford Minivan. Fits the bolt holes perfect, hooks with easy wire connects, and has intenal regulator. Got mine at a junk yard for $35. There is a similar model but a little bigger that is 110 amp or 130 amp from a Tarus. I used the pulley from my old alternator.

Is that a double groove pulley?

Yes, it is a solid steel double groove pulley. It was what came on the old alternator I had replaced many years ago.

I put in the MSD Billet Alternator, standard wire set-up, 130 Amp Model.

I am almost there. I went to the local junk yard but could not find a single grove Vbelt pulley for the short shaft of the replacement alternator. Do you know what vehicle they came on?

The pulley from the Standard Ford alternator that came in the Pantera worked for my modern 95 amp alternator.

I took the new alternator up to the local Alt repair shop. 2minutes later they brought it back with a single groove that worked perfectly. NoCharge.

That will be a good shop to use some time.

I took them the beer today. It turns out the shaft of this alternator uses a meteric nut.
