Larry, stock washers are quite thick and are flat on the nut-contact side and cut with a slight dome on the side that contacts the stub axle, which is machined with a matching cupped-surface. Why, I don't understand. I've seen any number of axles with the washer installed upside-down; at 400-or-so ft-lbs of torque, nearly any washer will "become" spherical on the axle side. Without the washer and depending on the tolerance stack-up, the nut may bottom in the axle threads before contacting the axle during torquing. I've also seen many where the p/n 9-A dust shield is gone. Are you still running those Quella-conversion tapered roller bearings?
