another A/C question

I had my first look at my A/C compressor. It doesn't appear to have the usual schrader valve. The outer threaded part looks the same but there is no needle valve inside. There is a separate cover next to this port that when removed reveals what resembles a valve. Is this an open/close control that replaces of the needle assembly in the Schrader valve? the compressor is the stock 1973 component.
