I’m going to pull the column out because it looks like the weld is broken on the lower strap mount. Is the upper u clamp supposed to be welded to the tube too? It doesn’t look like it is.
I just spent the weekend putting in SACC's power steering, so when I switched out the ignition and turn signals stalks, both brackets just came off by hand. I don't know if they were welded there originally or not though.
Riley, actually funny thing why I ask is that I was looking at the SACC as an upgrade in the future. I was thinking of welding both the u clamps to the column, but didn’t know if I’d need them for installing the power steering kit later on..
I just pulled this pic off another thread and marked it up. You can see the lower clamp has a plug weld to the tube in the center of it. (That’s the one on mine that broke loose). Looks like in this pic the upper clamp, closest to the turn signal, is not welded to the tube. I guess that’s stock.
I recently replaced the turn signal assembly and it appears in the best photo I have of that area that both brackets are part of the steering column. Also shows that in the parts catalog.
