I keep hearing the term "billet", sorry for my ignorance, but what is "billet"? Is this a manufacturing technique? I have seen a number of ads that say "billet steel."

Billet is a special designation that allows vendors to double the price of a functionally identical item. : )
Actually, I think it means the part was machined from a single chunk of metal, most frequently aluminum. I was told the hot rod roadster types went nuts on billet everything a few years back, but the craze kinda died out.
