Not sure whats currently in such 'kits' but some are little more than what appears to be flat-black tape that you carefully stick onto your trim, once its degreased. Weathering etc makes short work of any such facing forward into the air blast from driving. As for windshield trim, I advocate simply removing it as the black rubber gasket underneath looks very similar to blacked-out trim without the hassle & expense. If you must have such decorations, I believe powder coating is the only long-lasting way to change your polished stainless trim to black. Don't forget the windshield wipers too!
I have used a product by Mar-Hyde called "BLACK SATIN automotive trim paint" with outstanding results.I had a Mustang that had thousands of small chips in the windshield trim(also stainless steel).I taped it up,sanded it with 320 grit, cleaned it Mar-Hyde "Total Prep"cleaner then painted it .It looked awesome.I drove the car another 60,000 miles and when I sold it the trim still looked great!
Marlin, I found it at Salvo Auto Parts.I think Western Auto or Pep Boys carry it also. Works great.Practice on something first though. It seems to go on a bit different than regular paint.I think it is easier to use(harder to run, better coverage) but it is different.
