Rattle-can paint will be OK except around the exhaust ports where it chars, and wherever oil leaks, which will stain it. Biggest problem besides cheap paint quality, is getting the porous cast iron block clean enough for any paint to adhere to very well. It may take multiple applications of "Gunk" or a vapor degreaser to get the iron clean, especially around the rocker covers, pan & front cover, which typically have seeped oil since day-1, well soaking the cast iron around it. POwder coating will work if the engine is totally disassembled, since the cure temps are around 400 degrees. This high temperature will destroy any rubber seals, and seriously degreade any gaskets. Lower temps won't cure the powder.
