My very early 71 dash 1 had 4 studs in that went thru the rear cover into the AL part of the zf...2 of them on the driver side broke off. I have pulled the cover back a little while in the car, even started to drill the upper stud out, when it went all the way thru and into the case!!!.....What will happen if I pull the rear cover off? I am afraid parts may fall off. Can I do it in the car? How much truble am I in? Does anybody have an exploded view?

Perhaps the easiest solution to this problem would be to add a set of aftermarket side ears to your -1 ZF. Dennis Quella at Pantera Performance Center sells a SS set for under $200 that uses the stock side mount holes (that are probably on your -1) and a mating bracket that mounts to the center sway bar bolts. For a photo of this set up, go the the following on my Webshots site - http://community.webshots.com/photo/61316766/61678284tAltJh

Good luck, Larry
We had to pull the trans from the car, turned it upside down and finally bot the broken stud out!!!! And I still have reverse!!. I ordered a side mount kit from PI. Now time for a little media blasting, and I may as well strip all that undercoating and patch up a rusty area before we stick it back in. It only took about 2 hours to pull it I hope it goes back in as easy, I am sure next time it will be even easier, Thank you all for your help!
