I know this being mainly Pantera owners, and Panteras don’t come with auto trans. But most being Ford guys, I would guess many of you have owned or known people with automatics in early Mustangs etc. Please share your knowledge…

My Longchamp has C6 transmission. After doing 6000+ km this summer, a lot of it at 3000 rpm, I’m considering to convert to AOD to get that fourth gear. It would make my European vacations much more pleasurable I think.

Reading about that conversion, it often states that AODs are not as reliable as C6s. Though some companies sell AODs they claim can handle up to 600HP ($$$). With my approx. 400HP, I’d go with a simple Summit AOD. Monster Transmissions in FL sell a complete package with converter, dip stick, all that for $1900, claimed to 450HP and 3 y warranty

Any advice from anybody having done this conversion to AOD? Are modern AODs built tough enough? Another challenge I have is that I don’t want firmer shifts, or only slightly firmer, it’s a GT car, not a dragracer, and most claim to have race hard shifts, don’t want that. Any Longchamp owners done this conversion, I don’t see a problem with space underneath.

Any good sources of AODs in CA or even in Europe?

I purchased an AOD (stage 1) from Monster Transmissions for a 95 Mustang around 2004. Not being able to find a transmission shop in southern california that could fix my problem under $2,500 I tried the Monster Transmission. The fact that each transmission was tested on a transmission dyno was the selling point. The transmission with torque converter was excellent. the shifts felt the about the same as stock until my foot went to the floor. Transmission worked without problems or leaks for approximately 3 years until the car was T-boned.
Mikael,

I can. I can make it completely bulletproof but it won't be cheap.
The reason that I suggested contacting Roland was that after I supplied him with a trans , he had some engine trouble and was talking about converting the car to a BMW engine/trans. I'm not sure if that ever happened but if it did, his AOD might be available for purchase.
