I am trying to find any and all information on Carroll Shelby and the Pantera GT5S. I am hearing that he (Shelby of America) imported three Pantera's. #9425 (red w tan interior) #9426 (black w black interior) and #9428 (red w black interior). All three of these cars were sold to a Dr. by Carroll himself with two more to follow. I don't thing the last two ever happened. I am wondering where these cars are. Mine is #9426 and in my garage, wondering if the others are around or if anyone knows of them. I do think #9425 is on the east coast and went through Mecum a year or so ago and did not sell. The third car I have never heard a word about. Carroll actually owned a white GT5S that he used to design the Dodge Viper of all things but this car was not imported by him but it was owned by him. Anyway, just looking for information. More curious than anything. Thanks in advance................

Hi Mike…
im sure you have seen the material on ProvaMo?
You may have the letter?
I don’t think I have seen that.
Belgium Barry had one. I believe he sold it about three years ago.
In previous discusions here, Kirk chimed in.
I believe he said that those cars went through him at Amerisport to get "Federalised" in the US and that he thought there were about 12 of them?
Three is the number that was reported in the press while Shelby was with Chrysler.
Ioccoca was the CEO and like Ford wanted, he wanted an Italian exotic in this case for Chrysler. They were looking at the Pantera but went a different route and purchase Lamborghini.
If you ever see the VIN tag on a 91 Diablo it says Chrysler Motor Company on it.
The Dr. was local to my area. Unfortunately, he passed away last year. It would have been nice to have him provide some background on the purchases.
What was the Dr. doing? Was he marketing these three cars and selling them or did he want them for himself? Seems like he was marketing them.
Hello, I am new here but after stumbling upon this topic on a random search I am amazed by this story with Shelby and the Dr. buying these cars. My father was a good friend of Dr. Drab and I remember his red Pantera. We had talked about the Pantera before, but he never mentioned anything to me at least about the Shelby business, let alone there being 2 other cars. I am going to try to get more information, but as far back as I can remember (mid 1990s) he only held onto one of the red Panteras. I don’t have much more info than that, but I figured I could at least share 2 rather bad pictures I took of the car in about 1997. I don’t believe he kept the car past the mid 2000’s.

what a beast, and those wheels...
Those Panteras came about because of Chrysler's involvement in wanting an Italian super car when Ioccoca was the CEO.
Initially they purchased three and had them imported directly to Shelby for analysis as a production exotic for Chrysler.
Ioccoca had brought Shelby in house and he was converting some of the current production cars like the Daytonna and GLHS into souped up specials like he had done at Ford with the GT350's, etc.
To my knowledge there is only one of the first three that had the engine converted to the MoPar 340 with a turbo charger added. The other two stayed as delivered from Detomaso.
Where those cars got sold to, or who bought them is largely undocumented.
The final decision of Chrysler was not to deal with Detomaso and they went and bought Lamborghini. The Diablo of 1991 or 1992 model year clearly has a Chrysler VIN tag on them and that was as deep as Chrsler ever got with this Italian exotic thing. That was solely Lee Ioccoca's thing and apparently ended when he retired from Chrysler and Shelby had gone back to Ford.
So therein lies a tale.
There was a European member of this forum, Belgium Barry, that claimed to have owned one of the three. That was somewhere in the 5 years ago range and he said that he sold the car. He didn't say to where or whom though.
Those original three that Chrysler imported were not US certified for sale to the public and lacked equipment such as catalytic converters or emissions controls that would have made them certifiable in the US.
As it turns out, a fellow member here, Kirk Evans, somehow got involved in US certifying Panteras in the 1980's. The cars were different enough to give them a different name and they became known as Amerisport Panteras.
Why did I bring this up? Kirk in a previous discussion here on this subject claimed that all of the Panteras were sent to him to become Amerisport Panteras, for getting his certification parts installed.
He clearly stated that all had invoices on the cars he received as being delivered to Caroll Shelby. I don't remember the exact number he claimed but was something like at least a dozen, i.e., 12.
I believe he said that he didn't remember the exact number but would investigate the records that he had. The paperwork was not in his direct possession but was in storage at a storage facility.
I do not remember if he actually ever did complete that task. You might want to search for him in the membership files here and send him a PM about your car to see if he has any records of it? That's my best suggestion.
What original records of Detomaso cars survive, I'm not sure that anyone can answer that question now? Maybe yes? Maybe no?
The only records that I know you can get on Panteras are from Kevin Marti. He has the original sales records of US and North American Ford sold Panteras. That's all. Just the Ford records and the Amerisport of Chrysler/Shelby cars are somewhere else.
I'm not great at searching old threads here. Some of our other members are pretty good and maybe can help out? I'm more like Inspector Cleseau and will get you stuck without your clothes in Paris traffic in a Renault. Just be forewarned. And I don't know Elke Sommer either so don't even ask.
I'm old so I know some stuff. Here is a sketch of me walking my dinosaur when I was a boy.
Cameras weren't invented yet so someone had to do this artwork to document it.

A white GT5S owned by Carroll Shelby was restored at Galpin Ford in the San Fernando Valley part of Los Angeles. I believe it is still in their small auto "museum." I know I have seen a video on Youtube describing the car. I'll look for a link.
Here is a video about that car.

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing? What I am talking about is Panteras that were invoiced to Shelby, i.e., the window sticker listed Shelby.
If we are talking about Shelby listed in the "Title" that is another thing all together?
About 30 years ago there was a scam being run where one of Shelby's property managers "allegedly" was buying cars on the open private market, titling them in Shelby's name, and then reselling them as "personally owned by Shelby" without him ever knowing about it or even seeing it.
Some of those cars still come up to this day for sale and expect a premium because of Shelby being listed in the chain of previous owners.
my recollection at Chrysler is that Shelby had nothing to do with the Viper. At Chrysler in early '80's, we did do some restyle jobs for the Pantera. Nothing came of that. We did have a mid engine Pantera like car model shipped out to us in the CA studio (done in Detroit) for us to look at and was part of our open house presentation....
