Is there a written procedure of exactly how this is done please. I have a new chain and gear set coming over from Summit Via Mike Drew.
As you can see I have removed the balancer (It was shot) and ready to pull the gears and chain off,do I set piston number ? to TDC first?
I was amazed to see no chain tensioner, until I was told they were never fitted!! obviously the gears are both going on a keyway, so is it possible to get it wrong , Pete

Hi Peter -

Depending on the timing gear set you have, you may have the ability to advance or retard cam timing.

If you can - you should rotate then engine over to #1 TDC. You should see marks on both of the gears. If there is no advanced or retarded cam timing - there should be two marks on the gears that align.

Here's a set of instructions from a Comp Cams site that covers timing gear installation - including 351Cs...

Comp Cams 351C Procedure.

Hello Rocky,

Thank you very much for the info, The last engine I rebuilt was a Quad cam Merak motor, that was a challenge, the timing marks on the cams is almost none existent but I sold it to a nice bloke from Singapore when I found the price of a clutch assembly was over £2000!! a money pit it sure was.. I will have to get an engine manual for the 351C I don't even know which piston is Number one on a V8 to my shame, but here in England a V8 isn't a common Engine, Thank you again, Pete.
Peter,

#1 cylinder is the 1st one on the left side if viewed from your picture. All you need to do is to rotate the engine (clockwise) so that the keyway on the crankshaft is at the 12 o'clock position and the pin in the camshaft ( you can see the little notch in the fuel pump eccentric just below the retaining bolt) is in the 6 0'clock position. Then you align the "0" mark on the crank pulley with the dot on the camshaft pulley and you are good to go.
The replacement chain should be much tighter so they will both need to go on at the same time .
