One absolutely cannot drain all the lube out of a ZF without complete disassembly. I once had a ZF standing on a bucket with the case cover off, and when I separated the cases for gear work, about a pint splashed on the floor. Don't use the factory volume for casual lube replacemment: the 4.5 pint volume is only meant for dry, recently-overhauled ZFs.
Instead, fill as specified in the manual: add thru the side fill port until lube begins to drizzle back out the port. Then, go have a coffee or a beer, wait an hour and fill some more. There are dams, restrictions and passages inside that don't allow the 80W90 lube to flow away from the fill area rapidly. Over-filling will purge excess lube out the vent line when the ZF gets hot, making an unbelievable mess. Under-filling is worse: that will destroy your $10,000 transmission. So do it by the book.
OK here is the simplest and clearest way to measure the correct trans oil level. As per Lloyd the correct plug to measure oil level in a Dash 1 ZF is the angled one on the rear cover.

So no more guessing Wink

OK Sorry corrected info :''the simplest and clearest way to measure the correct trans oil level IN A MANGUSTA As per Lloyd the correct plug to measure oil level in a Dash 1 ZF is the angled one on the rear cover.''

my apologies to the Pantera guys for not being clear. ;0
A dash-1 tranny in a Pantera is what our foremost authority on the boxes- LLoyd Butfoy- refers to as a 'dash 1-1/2' ZF to avoid this very confusion. On very early Panteras, this ZF was used and is assembled from a Pantera diff case, top cover and end plate, and a Mangusta tranmission, with Mangusta gearing. Note that almost none of the internals for this assembly interchange with the dash-2 and no parts are still available. Do NOT break anything!
I broke my differential, and got parts from Paul Flemming in the UK that has been repairing, and also racing these early ZF boxes for decades.
He talked me through the whole dissasembly by phone !!
Great guy and really good service. He has been posting here, so you can find his contact info.
Best regards
Frode
