Dennis,
I believe the dash 2 has some taller gears, fourth and fifth? This would have given the newer cars a higher top speed.

Main difference between Dash 1 and dash 2 is that the internals of the dash 1, gear and syncho' wise, are totally different to that of the dash 2. ie no compatability with each other. The crown wheel and pinnions are common to each other. The dash 1 has more in common with the type 0 as used in GT 40s. If longer gear ratios are needed for dash 1's I have them. 0.705, 0.740, 0. 0.780, 0.807, 0.846.

Is either stronger, more reliable or have any advantage over the other besides the gearing? Are the mounts interchangable (rear vs. side mounts) from one to the other? Reason I'm asking is that I'm picking up a car with a D-1 and already have a D-2 spare.

I was told they were the same but I suspect the type 2 is much easier to get parts for. RBT told me part are available for both but that was about a year ago.
If you end up selling the type 1 I might be interested It would look right at home in a pushbutton car. For some reason my car came with two transaxles both type 2

My type 2 came with a rear mount I think the rear mounts are interchangeable from side to rear
Brian Graham told me that the bellhousing are differet and not interchagable. My car 1362 has tranaxle # 1811 in it, I know I can yake the cover off the shifter box and read the label, but can you identify it from the outside? Brian asked me about the 2 holes on the top of the bellhouse. He suspects dash 1. If the member from Austria is correct...4.0 is a taller differential than 4.22
