Early vs Late Fender I.D.

I am ordering a new fender for #2492. The serial number suggests an
early fender, but someone said that it is possible for it to be a late fender
car. Is it possible to tell from the headlight bar/mechanism? They had to cut
away part of the fender to get the bucket out, so some of the inner workings are visable, what do I look for? Yes, I know it's not very informative

(putting on flame suit), but it's all I have.
