I routed mine on the inside of the wheel well. It comes out near the oval hole that is used to mount the bumper. I retaped my entire harness with the tape that does not have any glue on it. Along the back panel I secured the harness with insulated clamps and stainless sheet metal screws. I have seen where people have routed the harness same as mine, then fished the end through the tail light panel so only a few inches of wire is exposed in the whole engine compartment, I can send some pics this weekend if you send me your email address.

By the way, I also routed my new stainless steel ac hoses inside the wheel well.

FWIW, the stock wiring protection was plastic electrical tape only. Someone added the spiral plastic stuff for some reason, but it certainly doesn't hurt it function-wise. IMHO, the best alternative is to leave the thing alone except maybe for routing it underneath so its out of sight. Be very sure to leave the connector plugs accessible, as we're still dealing with Luca Electrics and their corrosion-prone connectors. They all occasionally need to be unplugged & cleaned. Tucked inside a steel rail a connector might get skipped in the event of an electrical problem, prolonging the difficulty.
