I just took my original 50 year old break cable out and this is the way it lays down!
the long side is on the passenger side
There are two bendable tabs on the center brace of the frame to hold the cable in place as well..

Both cables held by the bracket, mounted on the transmission,

and from there (off center therefore the long leg) to the speedo cable, and then turns through the hole in the inner fender (on the picture the new rubber plug / grommet)
Driver-side - same way following the inside of the frame rail, and then turns in to the hole..
