I'm looking for information on orginal engine ID. I have finished the rebuild on the engine that I believe to be orginal but the machinest doesn't seem to agree with me. My Goose is a 1969 8MA514 one of the early ones, Euro car. It's my understanding that the Euro cars had the 289 whereas the US cars came with the 302. This is why I felt this to be the correct engine for the car, and as I was told by the previous owner. The machinest checked the serial numbers on the block and heads and came back as a 1965 Cobra 289. Is it possible that this would be one of the engines that was purchased from Shelby before thier conflict. Is there any way to research this to make sure? Any and all help is appreciated.

If you don't mind my two cents here, what do you mean by the engine serial numbers?
Do you mean the casting numbers on the block and heads?
Probably Ned Scudder, the SAAC Cobra Registrar would know more about this then I do but it is my understanding that the 289 Cobra engines were never assigned a "serial number" in the sense that it matched the chassis number of the car.
The engines were essentially crate engines supplied by Ford.
As with all Ford assembled engines they have assembly date codes stamped into them, but not serial numbers.
I'm not sure if the Mangusta's were actually documented to have 289 European and 302 US engines.
It is my interpretation that is what was "reported" to be.
I believe that the US used 68 Mustang 230hp engines for emissions reasons.
I'm not sure why because I know that Detomaso was given an exemption on the air pump system for the Pantera. I realize that was as a result of Ford's influence because they were the official "importer" of the Pantera.
I would presume that was the same for the Mangusta but it may not be. I do not know who the importer of the Mangusta was. They may all be grey market cars.
I do not know if the US "geese" I've seen had air pumps and exhaust injectors because of the lack of viewabilaty of the engines. I would expect them to have the California air injection system.
Does your car have a tag pop rivited to the door jamb stating who imported the car. If it was European delivery, it is supposted to.

When you state serial numbers on the block ? Do you mean the serial numbers on the block like the Pantera has. Both my cars have serial number blocks that match the serial numbers on the Vin plates somewhere on the car. My 73 has a engine plate in the engine bay that matches the serial number on the block and my 79 has the serial number plate under the front hood that matches the block. Does A Mangusta have the same ?? My belief is as with my Cobra that Euro Cars have serial # Engines on the blocks when they were shipped out of the country and the visa versa.
