Because you did not elaborate, I will assume your car is near stock. If so, it may have a point style distributor. Check points for condition, and adjust gap. While the distributor cap is off, twist the internals to know the mechanical advance is not stuck, and suck on the vacuum advance hose from the carb to know vacuum advance is working. Make sure this hose connects to the carb ABOVE the throttle plates. When you restart the car, check ignition timing, and TOTAL advance. If this all checks out, suspect one of the usual culprits: plugs, wires, or carb. Even if it turns out to be one of them, the ol' gal will run better still just because of the TLC into the distributor.
