Hi
i am a new pantera owner, i finally got my car today after 3 or so months in shipping.
it needs a few things fixing, in the next few days.
1st , do these cars have a horn ? if so how do you press it ?

2nd how do you lift the headlights up ? i turn them on, but they do not lift ? i pulled the limit switches and cleaned them as they did not make contact, but still nothing from the h/light motor !

on the switch panel, what is the lower switch for ? mine has no writing on it !!

do the thermos turn on and off automatically ?mine turn on with ign on, but so sound slow.

on the dash there is a heater and a fan light ? when i turn the cabin fan on the fan light comes on, when does the heater light come on ??

Thanks in advance for all your help

Congrats for a start!

I'm not 100% on all of your questions - but here's a few points to start with before the knowledgable boys get out of bed:
1 Horn push is on the indicator stalk (Push it in towards the column) Unless it has been converted to centre of the wheel.
2 Something isn't right. My first check would be fuses.
3 Errrr, don't know - could be an addition. Look at the back of it and see if it looks like original wiring or aftermarket bodge.
4 Yes, automatically, but they shouldn't come on when cold - they might have been bodded. You could well have a bad earth somewhere - this might explain other things.
5 Don't know - at all....

Hi,
I can help some too,

1: The original stalk looks exactly the same as the one you would find in a Hillman/Sunbeam Hunter. A quality item from the 'Joseph Lucas - the Prince of Darkness'.
These can burn out if too much current is drawn through them. I fried one on my Rapier when the horns were out of adjustment and attempting to pull 30 amps through the horn switch.
I can't remember if the Pantera uses a relay for the horns or not.

2:
As Phil said, sounds like a problem.
If the ignition is on the lamps should go up as soon as you turn the main lamps on.
The wire to actuate the headlamp doors is on the back of the main light switch, piggy backed onto the main feed to the head lamps (if your wiring is still the original). From memory it's the skinniest wire on the switch.

3:
One of the rocker switches on the console does nothing at all, think it's the bottom one.
On the very early cars (not sure when) it was used to turn on the second cooling fan. This is how it is shown in my owner's handbook, but not how it works in my car!

4:
Cooling fans - mine only come on if the car has been standing still with motor running for several minutes (but it's rarely more than 25 celcius here!) First one, then the other. This is how they work from the factory - but many get changed. The relay(s) for these are near the top of the rad.

5:
If think on mine the lamp marked 'heater' comes on when I turn on the cabin fan.
Perhaps the 'Fan' lamp is meant to come on when the engine cooling fans come on (or when you turn on the second one on an early car). I can't remember if I have one of those or not and the cars not nearby.
On my 72 the horn button is located to the right of the steering column, below the dash.

My "heater" light comes on when my engine temp gets about about 220°. "fan" light comes on when you switch on the cabin fan.

When my lights stopped popping up I cleaned the contact wires to the relay located on the left side of the car near the radiator -that fixed it.

My horn may be an aftermarket sort of addition -I thought it was factory!
1. Press the stock turn indicator stalk in toward the column. Although many are broken after 30+ years of service. Check if your horn works. Also, do your turn signals stay on when they're supposed to, and do they cancel when you complete your turn? If not, Bill Taylor (SOBill on this board and the DT Forum) rebuilds them better than new for $50 (I think that's the price).

2. After checking everything else that's been suggested, check if you're getting power to the headlight motor when the headlights are on and neither of the limits switches is engaged? If not, trace and isolate your electrical problem. If you do have power at the headlight motor, the you may have a stripped gear in the motor housing. It's the same plastic gear used in the windows that frequently strips.

3. The last blank switch is an extra. Many people use it as a manual override to turn on their cooling fans.

4. The fans are "supposed to" turn on by a thermo switch, however they are VERY prone to failure. Just about every time I've read of Pantera road trips to big events like the Fun Rally in Las Vegas, I read about someone's thermo switches failing and a car overheating. The on-road fix? Bypass the thermo switches so the fans run constantly with the ignition. Many Panteras have been changed to this configuration to avoid the potential overheating problem of failing thermo switches. My car has been wired like this for the last 29 years.

As far as the motors sounding slow, you may need to rebuild them. I rebuilt mine and they work great. Here are some pics of when I overhauled my radiator compartment and rebuilt my fans:

These are the instructions I followed:

If you want to replace your stock fans, but maintain the pusher fan arrangement, Hall Pantera sells Mariah fans that are supposed to be excellent. PIM often has used sets available for sale too. Another possible option are Cool Cat fans, which are popular with the Jaguar crowd. They're less than 1/2 the cost of the Mariah fans and look to be a similar form factor to the original Lucas fan motors, but I have not called them for measurements yet:

5. Not sure. I don't remember if mine has both a fan and heater light or just a heater light. Anyway, I do know that whenever I turn on the blower motor in the car, regardless of whether it's for the heater or AC, the "heater" light comes on.

Anyway, congratulations on your "new" Pantera, and welcome to the family!
WOW, thanks guys for all your help.
I found the horn !! now I need to change my underwear !!is is press the indicater in.

i did not know the ign needed to be on to lift the headlights up and down, now with ign on the headlights go down, when off, but won't go up. if i wind them up, turn the lights on, then turn the ign on they drop a bit then stop, then turn the lights off with ign on they drop properly, any suggestions ??

fans maybe slow because of the connections made , they are not that good !!
still going on the rest !!
