Where do you get halon fire extinguishers?

The manufacure of halon was banned a while back. And the manufacture of new Halon fire extinguishers was also banned.

BUT, old extinguishers can be refilled with existing stocks of Halon. I called around and found a local extinguisher service company that could provide 2 1/2 pound - good car size - refilled, certified units for a flat $75 - with a bracket.

And eBay has units, often from aircraft in large bottle sizes. Must be some FAA regs that require bottles to be replaced after a certain time length. They seem to go pretty cheap, considering the cost of the gas inside them.

Halon is sort of like R12 - still out there, everywhere, just got to be willing to pay the price.

If you ever douse a carburator with a fire extinguisher you'll be sorry. If you ever get a crb fire from general flooding .....(not from fuel leak or fuel line breakage!!!!)...Just keep cranking the starter.

Years ago when I was flying twin engine Cessna's, (close to 20 years ago) I was on a charter trip. I dropped off the passengers. The typical starting procedure was to open the throttle and prime the hell out of it. This was quite a bit different then the hot procedure.

After a long day and several stops, I primmed the damn thing hot out of habbit. I fired it up and the entire cowling engulfed in flames.

The guy next to the fence was jumping up and down running his hand across his neck as if to say "shut it down, shut it dow!". I just kept cranking, killed the mixture and open the throttle to full. It started to fire and as soon as it did it sucked the entire flame front back in the carb.

I went back and told my boss and he laughed..."really get's your attention when it does that doesn't it!"
