Chandler, ARIZ. (June 10, 2013) – After long and successful runs in the Valley, both Speedworld Dragstrip and Firebird International Raceway closed earlier this year.

Speedworld succumbed to politics between its owner Dan Matthews, the County and the State. On the other side of the Valley, Charlie Allen was unable to renegotiate a lease with the Gila River Indian Community to secure the future of Firebird International Raceway. After 30 years of serving both local and national motorsports enthusiasts, Firebird held its final event on May 30, 2013.

Looking back into the recent past and ahead taking a peek into the future, the Gila River Indian Community intends to run the former Firebird Property as a motorsports complex.

They hired former Daytona Motor Speedway VP Dick Hahne to be the executive overseeing the operation, and later brought on Bill Schneider into a management position.

Although Dick Hahne comes from a long history of circle track experience, Bill has owned and operated drag strips in the Midwest. Together, Dick and Bill are a winning combination.

Just today a Facebook page launched announcing the property on the Gila River reservation will be called the “Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.” Given its proximity to the casino and convention center, it’s not a bad choice.

After some remodeling and repairs over the summer, we understand that the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park will hold an opening event on the weekend of October 12, 2013. The Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series has already announced that they are moving their September event from San Diego to the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. The event is scheduled to run September 13 – 15, 2013.
