Folding Headlight Mechanism

What mods have people made to the folding headlight mechanism. As I pulled it apart I can see the bar was probably welded in before the fenders were put on and there is no way to remove it without cutting it out.

I had thought about removing the entire assembly and retrofiting an assembly from another car.

On one hand I think the tube as is is very stiff. With the motor upgrade it is probably a good system.

On the other hand removing the tube gives a little more room in the radiator area, maybe save a pund or two, and the old "bearing" surface would be replaces with a new mechanism (since there is not much you can do with what is already there).

I seem to remember someone removing the bar and using individual electric motors for the lights. Can't recall who, though. Will continue searching.
