fuel gauge problem

finished installing fuel tank, i connected the wires to sender, and the gauge is pinned at FULL,and the tank is completely empty.i disconnected the wires to sender ,and gauge still reads full when ignition key is on, dont know if the gauge is good, car was not running and was dissasembled when i bought it, i'm just sorting out the electrical system before i reinstall engine..........THANX GUYS......DAVE

I'm not the expert here..... I belive the guage works via resistance. The wire from the sending unit sends a signal that is resisted to ground. You should be able to remove that wire from the guage and it goes to empty. By grounding the wire that leaves the guage.....the guage should peg full/ maybe your wire is shorted to ground on the wat to the tank.

Sorry it was the first thing that came to mind ... and dont worry I will be asking the same questions when I get to that part .. electrical is not my strong point

...Yes! Sounds like the 'signal' Resistance wire is shorted to ground...

thanx for the replies, which wire is the resistance wire? there are three wires going to the sender, black/ground?, white/black stripe, to sender?, and yellow to sender?.............thanx guys...........DAVE

the white/black strip wire is the sender wire. This is the one that may be shorted. The yellow wire is the low fuel warning light wire. The black wire is ground. Zero resistance on the White wire indicates a full tank. ~200 Ohms resistance on the White wire indicates an empty tank...

Speaking of fuel gauge, I've got the opposite problem. I gave the P-car a tune up last weekend, and my previously working fuel gauge now reads empty with full tank. I didn't come near the tank or the sender.
