There were several things that helped me when building the garage. First of all I needed shelving and tables.

To build shelving, I started before I had a welder so much of my shelving is built from wood. I may build steel shelves in the future. The tables were made from steel. One of the best things I ever did was get a chop saw from HF, a good basic MIG, and a supply of steel.
To get steel don't go to the hardware store, find your local steel supplier. You will need a trailer as it comes in 20' or 24' lengths. The price will be a fraction of steel you buy at a hardware store.
DOORs! Doors! Doors! I got about 40 doors in my barn. A few of them I actually use as doors. The rest I make tables and shelves. Hard wood doors for working tables, the hollow core for general light weight storage. Dad bought out a store and paid $1 a piece for the doors. If you can find them, get as many as you can. The nice thing about tables is if you mess them up, you can flip them over.
ONly one table has a steel table top. I had it cut at the steel company. It was pricy but they can chop it up to the right size (and I kept the scraps for other projects).
Look at all the stands in the photos. I have made every one. All have been tremendously usefull. I have made more things with the steel and the welder then I can remember. Even roto's for the car and a car dolley.

If you have the room and plan on getting serious in your garage, get welder, steel and doors.
The shelf with the little boxes on it is also quite usefull in storing small things. It is suprising how trying to keep track of the small stuff can inundate you.
