Garmin Nuvi - help needed

I haven't tried this yet, but this link claims to be able to create the itinerary files for TOMTOM units and allow you to do the click-and-drag etc....

If Garmin uses ITN files, then this may be the solution for you.

Just tried it, it worked perfectly on my TomTom navigating from northern Ontario to Florida with a drag from Nashville to Memphis to see how it handled the change. I loaded the route to the device and it looks like it does on Google.

,,, ah yes I also recieved from Santa a NUVI 780 ... but have not gotten that far yet.

But I also have a question:

Inside there was a tag which stated activate 3 months MSN Direct ? Do I have to subcribe to MSN or is this what you guys are atalking about ..I can download GOOGLE ?

That is an optional feature that gives some real time info. Free, and then who knows how much for each month thereafter.

Larry, the Garmin web site is pretty decent on support FAQ's, etc. However, this is the only thing I could find that goes to your question. Note that there is an asterisk that seems to say your can't transfer routes.

Precisely my issue, and problem.

I've spent hours today with shareware and an online site that takes a My Google Maps file, converts it to the Garmin GPX format and sends it to the Garmin.

And have yet to figure out why it refuses to work.

I've set up a Virtual Box on my Mac to do this all in Windoze and am about to give up and finish the New Year's egg nog!

I found some shareware that will convert a TomTom .itn file to a .gpx for Garmin, but it doesn't work with the .itn files created by the website I mentioned in an earlier post.

I'm going to test out something called TYRE tomorrow if I get a chance to see what it does, but it's too late tonight.

Been there, done that.

The version I found and used defaulted to a Google maps version that did not allow click-and-drag.

I have found the click-and-drag Google technique so very handy. I've used it for a year or so and it lets you play and search with great ease. Nice for creating those off-the-driven-path twisty-turny drives, and it really helped in finding a route to avoid the downtown San Francisco stop-and-go crawl when going to the PCNC Comedy Day event in Golden Gate Park a year back.

I'm now playing with Garmin's own "Roadtrip" format, which is in a Mac format, but am so far not finding it to be to my liking.

Today I'm seeing if I can download Garmin's Mapsource into the Virtual Box (remember, I'm on a Mac) and see if that is the answer.

But I truly want to get the "modified" click-and-drag Google map easily loaded into the Garmin Nuvi, but so far....

Heck Larry take back your Nuvi and get a Droid smart phone. GPS capable and it uses Google Maps already for its navigator.

Yes, did give that some thought.

But,tightwad that I am, I like a cheap cell phone and fear what my bills would be with web access, etc.

I'm from that generation that still thinks of a cell phone in terms of it being just....... a phone.

My wife has a Droid and I think she spends a little less than $100 a month for voice/data. She LOVES the built in nav.

Depending on how much you travel the Apple phone does not have very good coverage. They do have maps that you can use to determine your coverage.
