I removed my engine for a rebuild. The ZF is also out. Question is, there is a protective shield in front of the gas tank that is riveted in place. Was that common from the factory or did a previous owner do that?(The rivets) I've read previous post on the tank removal, but I don't see anything about drilling the rivets out. I haven't thoroughly looked at this but I plan on checking it out this weekend. Just wanted to inspect it since the engine is out, as well as other things. Thanks for any info that is given.

Mine was pop riveted in place, I drilled them out and was quite surprised by the excellent condition of the tank. We looked inside the tank and it showed no signs of corrosion. I had the tank lightly beadblasted and powdercoated and it looked great! I put the tank back in with a polished s/s shield and used pop rivets to hold the brackets to the shield and used s/s screws to secure the brackets to the frame and other attachment points.

Hope yours is as clean as mine.
