What are the options for reinstalling these covers and their gaskets? Should they be installed with or without sealant? If a sealant is appropriate, which ones are applicable? Thanks in advance.
I'm thinking about using RTV for both of these parts' surfaces. I know that it can be more difficult to remove the part later when doing such. Otherwise, what do you guys think about RTV for these parts?
I am a fan of Permatex#3 sealant. For close tolerance parts its awesome. That and a bit of thread is all we used to seal up Lycoming crankcase halves. You only need to dab it on with a finger on each mating surface. The stuff works great. The #2 is great as well and easier to find. Works as a thread sealant too.
Remember that the side cover gasket thickness is a part of the preloading of the ring gear bearings. If you delete the gaskets you have to adjust accordingly. Forest
