Headlight doors

Right,Left and early and late. As with most things on our cars, most parts need to be "fit" to each specific vehicle, as no to are identical.

The early/late differences are slight. Mounting is the same, headlight trim and all is the same. The fender openings differed a bit in size, and the doors followed. When 2511 was repaired, the bodyman had to weld up/extend the door to give the same gaps on the repaired fender as the original door had on the undamaged fender. Nothing a good body man anywhere would not be able to handle.

I got the skinny on this one. My early pushbutton1362 had bolts through the door into the mount. I bought a replacement from a later car..it had studs out the back, and in different positions. I had to drill new holes and remove the studs. I still have an unacceptible gap that will be fixed like Larry says.

I have a bit of "experience" with the early/late fender-headlight bucket saga. If memory serves me correctly #2729 is where the change was made. The headlight openings on the fenders differ by like 3/16", and thus the headlight buckets were made to compensate for the difference.

Wouldn't you know... there's a set on ebay right now!

The headlight buckets on eBay have the number 5486 stamped on them. This is probably the chassis number of the Pantera they belonged to. He claims they're from a '71, but 5486 suggests it was on a later year car. Here's the link:

I hope they are from a later car because mine is a 74 L.Is there any way of knowing for sure?I am currently bidding on these but am not sure if I should continue.If I have to alter them to fit on my car then I guess I should just repair mine.Thanks for all your responses

"IF" 5486 is a chassis number, they are from a '73 L.

Do all headlight doors have a chassis number stamped.I just don't want to end up with a set that don't fit.

Well I just checked my original headlight doors and mine have 7122 stamped which coresponds with my chassis so it must be for a 73L like George say's so I will continue to bid Thanks for all the help

The headlight buckets are the only removable body parts, or should I say two of the three locations, that the last four digits are stamped. If it's late buckets your after, you found them. Great timing!

When researching the chassis number on my former '74L, I found out that almost all Panteras have the chassis number stamped in 3 places: On the pedal box, in the headlight buckets, and I forget the third place (it was many years ago).

My Pantera only had the number stamped on the pedal box.

Well I was the high bidder on those ebay headlight doors but the reserve was not met.I emailed him and asked how much $.He wants $500.00 for the pair.Does that sound pricey or reasonable?
