help with unknown ID tag

I've seen it horizontally mounted on the left rear inner fender, near the left deck shock. I believe its the 'body service number', for which none of us have found a use for.

Been looking for stray holes to mount it to and don't see any. Somebody has a wide view of this tag. Mounted in their car picture would be great. Thanks in advance

Not surprised. Some owners get kind of anal about finishing off their engine bays and weld up holes etc. Maybe pull the left rear wheel and look up on the inside of the inner fender? NOBODY metal-finishes the backside!

I've never seen a tag like that one.  The pics below are what is typically found, at least during the Ford era years.

I've never seen that tag before either.  

Bosswrench you are right about nobody finishes the back side and thankfully, it has helped me remember mounting locations of all sorts of stuff ! . I think I have accounted for every hole from the backside (much easier since there is no mechanicals hung yet) . Only mystery holes could be inside of boxed in areas under the front carpet. I will tape it to my tool cart and keep my eyes out here and on the car.

John I only have a motor tag, no emissions tag or holes for one. The motor number tag is in the exact same location as yours. Must have had No emissions tag in 2/72

The other oddity is there is nothing around the brake box Vin (large tag with window) , it was just a cutout in the carpet to view the vin. I can clearly see no holes on either side of the box.

The above pics are not from my car.  My early '71 (5/71) does have an emissions placard, but it does not have any motor number tags, nor does it have a motor number stamped in the engine block.  USA cars were required to have an emissions placard.

My pedal box only has the stamped VIN with the carpet cut as you described.

June 71 build for my s/n 1744.   Engine bay has emissions tag and motor number tag.  Nothing else.  No tag in front of car over brake box.   S/N tag inside windshield drivers side.  S/N tag on driver's door jamb.

I don't think this tag belongs to your car.

I am almost convinced myself the only other car it could be off of is a 70 Camaro. But not sure how it ended up in the ziplock bag with the Cats tags 🤯

Begining to embrace that De Tomaso consistently inconsistent at least. I don't have an emissions tag. (Vehicle was hydro blasted to bare metal, no holes for emissions plate)  All others are as described but I also don't have the original valve cover. It may have possibly been mounted there I guess. Just the same would be nice to have one.

A quick search on Mustangs says they were in the top of the valve cover (as I remember also) or on the side.

Just the same I may pick a plate up and mount it below the motor # tag.

And, to add more confusion, the '71 had two different emissions placards.  

The first placard is from my car, s/n 1490.

The second placard is s/n 2071.  I'm guessing here, but this may have had a dual point distributor.

The third placard is s/n 2806.  This does have the dual point distributor.  In 1972, the C/R was dropped to 8.8, which resulted in a considerable HP loss.  Ford tweaked with the cam and timing in an effort to try to regain the loss, but their efforts fell short.
