From the UK. My Pantera is fitted with Boss heads and suffers from pinking (pre-detonation) at moderate to high engine speeds under load. It is fine at low revs under load when you would normally expect it to pink. The ignition timing is set at 10 degree static and this advances to 30 at 4000rpm. Can anyone suggest a reason and a cure for this problem.

Sure- too much advance. 10 initial plus 30 at full throttle equals 40. Unless you build your own engines, experiment a lot with cams or have access to racing fuel, you should be running no more than 36 or 37 total for best power and less chance of engine damage. There's a rubber or metal sleeve that drops onto a post in most distributors to limit the amount of centrifugal advance your system can run up. This is most conveniently done off the engine on a distributor machine, but you can approximate it by trial-and-error.
