Dennis. Only saw your post now, but I thought id just add this horror story; Since the ZF installed in a Pantera runs upside down ( Does any one know why ? ) there are casing compartment that were on the top of the housing & are now at the bottom, - and if the dude that is filling the box watching the "Full" indicator hole in the casing, the first lot of oil will fill up only the first casing - compartment and the oil will then flow out the Full indicator hole quite quickly, having not got to the rest of the box....and if the dude dosent know how much oil should go in, he might close it all up with only some of the compartments filled, leaving one with a un-filled box....problem...allways check how much should go in in the first place, - like u have.....enjoy.

I had heard it was to get additional ground clearance for a road going car, vs. thelower slung GT40 type race cars. This also allowed the engine to be mounted higher. Otherwise you would be scrapping on every pot hole in the road.
Tai / DeTom Very interesting about the ZF running upside down. Went to Ferrari garage today and saw the new F430 race car, the guys were getting it ready for the next round of racing. The mechanic pointed out to me how low the engine and gear box have been mounted, this was done to get the centre of gravity lower. Very impressive, if you get a chance go and see one you will really be amazed, also look how high and long the trumpets are, this will put into perspective the depth of what the engine is seated. Compare that to the engine height of the pantera. Dennis
Absolutely true. A low CG is essential to high G cornering. I looked at a Porsche Carrera GT. It must have caster rollers mounted on the engine pan because that baby will scrap going out of the driveway otherwise. They even had to make like a seven inch diameter clutch because it was so low to the ground. However, having said that, I hatehaving to grit my teeth everytime I see a bump in the road. Worrying about how much tranny damage I will sustain by running over a dead racoon will take too much enjoyment out of the ride.
