Hello,

I'm opening a new discussion today about my problem with my ZF Trans (as the title of the old one doesn't match anymore)

So I need to fix my ZF trans which doesn't work, I may have the opportunity to buy a /2 from RBT trans but it's a lot of money.
The problem might come from the input shaft and ring and pinion set but this weekend, someone who have seen the parts told me it was fine and my trans was in good condition, I only need all the bearings and miscellaneous parts to make the trans works.

What do you guys think about my input shaft and ring and pinion, I'm totally lost because some others people told me it was dead.

Here is the LINK

Thanks
Frederic

Yes gentlemen, the ring & pinion is completely junk and the 1st gear on the input shaft looks like it is sad shape also. ( resd : going to be noisy!!) What does the matching half of the 1st gear set look like?
With the rust I see on the pinion bearing I would guess that all of the bearings are also bad, if that rust is elsewhere in the box.
Yes ALL of the bearings of the trans need to be replace.

I don't understand why a guy in france who works in a very serious company making ALL kind of ring, pinion, input shaft, told me it was fine to put it back like that...he was sure of him and I believe he has lot of experience in his job.

I can't tell how look like the matching half of the 1st gear because don't know wich part is it in my big bunch of parts...

I'm a little bit (or a lot) lost.

Thanks guys
Well, if you were to replace only the bearings, the unit could last some longer, but there is no way to predict for how long... And to rebuilt the unit with only the bearings replaced, drive a 1000K or so, and have completely ruined gears - in which case you'd have to replace many if not all bearings again - would be kind of retarded no..?

On the long term the best scenario is to replace all what shows signs of any damage. Worst is the spalling (surface material coming loose) on ring and pinion. Other parts show a reasonable amout of indents and scuffing. Rust on gears doesn't need to be a problem as long as you can easily wipe it off with something like Scotch brite, but if not, the rust ate itself too deep in to the material, and might cause more severe damage on the long term.

Go for the best solution you can affort...

FWIW, transmissions, though of a somewhat different kind is my job Wink
Cayman, you need a ZF Overhaul manual before you start trying to work on the gearbox or buy parts. These are available from several vendors quite cheaply. A total overhaul on a junk ZF can run $11,000 depending on what's worn out. The long input shaft might be $2400. ZFs are very complex transaxles; new parts are only available from RBT who bought the rights to that gearbox from ZF, and there is no adjustment anywhere: all clearances are the result of selective parts fits or specialized shims. One cannot replace only a ring gear without replacing the matching pinion gear as well. The synchronizer 'blocker' rings are steel and wear each time one shifts. These cannot usually be replaced without also replacing the gear-cones they wear against.... and those are integral to a gear which is matched to the other gear in the pair. So a simple 'synchro-fix' usually includes both the driving gear and the driven gear as well as the ring- for $1200 or so. Some others have used parts available but they may be as worn (or worse) than what you already have. Get the manual, educate yourself and you may find that what you have is not exactly a gearbox, but a collection of worn but useable 40-year-old spare parts.

I decided to buy all of the bearings from RBT, I received them one week ago, I just bought today a complete manual on ebay.
So once I'll have it, I give the box to a guy but I will tell him how it's hard to rebuild the box...and see how he reacts, I want to make sure I'm not going toward big problems.

Thanks

By the way do you guys think its normal that RBT increased the price of bearings of $700 in only one month ? I asked a first time it was $1500 then one month later $2200 and I'm not happy with that at all...very strange...
