I elected to provide the heat and sound deadening on the inside of the firewall and the metal hatch cover.

I installed two layers of Dynamat and a cover of a foil heat barrier.

there is plenty of room to do this, and the insulation is safe from engine bay oils, grime and physical damage  

assuming you do have an empty engine bay and the gas tank has been removed, pay attention to how tightly your gas tank fits against the firewall. The gas tank has very little wiggle room once properly positioned.

As for specific locations, I think the goal is to cover as much area as you can to gain maximum benefit.
