There were two Mangustas in former Yugoslavia. Back in 80's I saw a small ad in local newspaper with an example advertised. Number was from Osijek (a town in eastern part of Croatia) and I ever since wanted to know what happened to that car. Owner unfortunately died in 2011, just before I planned to visit him and ask for details.
Car was black with red interior, as you can see. It was probably stolen somewhere in Western Europe, as the guy ho drove it has (according to story I heard) actually been chased by police at the time he roughly hit the railroads, damaged the underside and had to abandon the car. Later car was sold at customs auction in Belgrade, changed several hands, got some kind of 'restoration' (basically just so that last owner here could drive it, what he did, a lot).
Car was serviced in Germany (Stuttgart, I am told) and actually driven back then from Yugoslavia to Germany and back, during the wintertime... Eventually it was sold in late 80s (for 60.000 DM) to Belgium and that's the last I know about that car. Unfortunately, I have no idea about chassis number. I'd like to trace it and maybe even, if it is close enough within Europe, try to get in touch in the owner and maybe do a feature about it for Croatian Evo magazine, due to local connection.
Any help in identification will be much appreciated. Here are the pics:
But believe it or not, it wasn't the only Mangusta in former Yugoslavia! There was an ad for another one, dating from 1972, in leading Yugoslav car magazine back in 70s, Auto Magazin. It appeared at late 70s, I have only a very tiny picture of that ad with name, address and phone of the seller.
So far I could find that car was bought, maybe even new in Sweden , by a Yugoslav emigrant and brought back home sometimes during 70s. It also changed hands a few times and eventually came to a small town in Bosnia, with an engine transplant (4 litre engine, probably Mercedes or BMW). That part of the country was almost destroyed during the war in 90s but it seems that car survived the war and was seen in derelict state behind a fuel station in 1996 or 1997. If this story rings a bell, I'd like to hear, if not I'll try to find out more, maybe it is still somewhere there...
