Yesterday we changed out the gearbox oil, and when I removed the filler plug, there were quite a few pieces of steel "chunklets" stuck to the magnetic filler plug.

I know Roger tracked the car, and I know he built the box himself with RBT parts.

The box operates perfectly, butter smooth, so issues, and now has fresh new oil in t, so I'm not too worried, but is it really abnormal to find little bits stuck to the magnetic filler plug?

I know on my old Ducati (which shared engine and trans oil) it was normal to find some chucks in there, just from break-in, sharp edges of things (dog teeth) breaking off, etc.

Nothing was too big, my guess would be synchro teeth bits.

Anyways, after we changed the fluids, now the car won't start so i'm off to find what I hit, or knocked off, or what wire I accidentally pulled out, or if something just happened to die right then out of the blue.

Sounds like there are new gears in the box.

"Blue printing" gear boxes mostly entails cleaning off the flash on the gears. If you don't do that then you get "shavings" in the fluid and that is what the magnet is in there for.

Probably normal for a new stock gear box but something to be aware of and you should be on the lookout for abnormalities.

I've seen gearboxes that had portions of teeth missing and you would not even know that until you saw them.

The box was quiet and operated perfectly.
I pulled the plug on my car last year as part of my restoration. I'm embarrassed to say that I put 132,000 miles on it and never changed the tranny lubricant. My bad. My plug had a very small amount of metal on the magnet .. more like dust than actual particles. But I was always pretty kind to the tranny .. no tracking (unless you count the Virginia City Hillclimb .. once).
That's basically what it looked like with a couple slightly larger little pieces. No big chunks.

Some fingernail sized shavings, a few little (I assume) synchro teeth tips. Nothing too alarming, but the oil was old and dark, the car was track driven, so I expect it's just wear and tear.

Box is smooth as butter. Changed the oil to Sythetic, we'll see how it makes the box feel.
