I used a flat peice of aluminum and a u bolt clamped to the water pipe. I should clean up my wiring, I also have the tach adapter mounted there too. I don't trust the tach adapter. I have burned 3 of them! I have this one fused with a 5 amp. It blew last week but started working when i replaced it. DON"T put the adapter in the car!

As you said, I'd heard that excessive heat had caused many a failure in an MSD system so I mounted mine in the front trunk & ran the wiring back to the engine compartment. Could have mounted it behind the passengers seat with less of a wiring run but decided I wanted to keep it out of the passenger compartment. Works well for me.
I would suggest putting it just behind the passenger seat inside the cabin. That way it avoids all problems. I just washed my engine compartment and avoided the MSD box and it still shorted out! Don't get it wet! no matter what MSD says about it being water proof...it aint! This occurred with another Pantera owner in Maui while driving in the rain.
Having read numerous archive posts about failed MSD units due to heat, I chose to mount my AL6 and tach adapter in the front trunk on the firewall directly behind the battery. It's a little bit more work to run the cables through the rockers but nothing excessive.

So far so good, but if I were doing it again (which it seems likely I will have to at some point if everyone eles experience is anything to go by) I'd probably go for a Mallory unit, apparently they guarantee them for life and fix 'em for free if they do go wrong.
