Definitely check the archives for this one. I think a lot of people have been burned from all of the carriers like UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, etc.... as far as customs fees. The only one that seems to work well is the US Postal Service, at least for sending stuff from the US to Canada -- I cannot remember if there was the same problem in your instance though. Check the archives and see what was talked about before -- I think the thread should be within the last two or three years on this board.
Try Freightquote.com ask for Darren ... or just go to their site ... they shop all the shipping co's for quotes and also know the restrictions in size and packaging ..

for example now ...to europe you cannot use a wood crate. Only Cardboard and a lot of buble wrap ...not sure if crates are allowed in and out of Canada and the USA ?
